Nayin 纳音 · sound element #10 of 30
Wood at its death and grave positions: soft growth whose fate depends almost entirely on timing.

壬午癸未,木至午而死,至未而墓,故杨柳盛夏叶凋,枝干微弱,取其性之柔也,故曰杨柳木
Why the name: Renwu and Guiwei — wood dies at Wu and is buried at Wei, so the willow's leaves wither in high summer, trunk and branch slight and weak; it takes the softness of its nature, hence Willow Wood.
杨柳木者,盖木至午而死,至未而墓,故盛夏叶稠,得其时则富寿,非其时则贫夭
Willow Wood: because wood dies at Wu and is buried at Wei, its leaves are dense in high summer; got in its season it means wealth and long life, out of its season, poverty and early death.
This is the bluntest entry in the sixty, and the only one whose classical gloss states the good and the bad outcome in the same clause. Wu and Wei are where wood's twelve-stage cycle reaches 死 and 墓 — death and the storehouse.
得其时则富寿,非其时则贫夭 — in season, wealth and long life; out of season, poverty and early death. The text is not describing a person; it is saying that this particular image carries almost no buffer of its own, so whatever the rest of the chart supplies decides it. San Ming Tong Hui accordingly makes this wood's readings turn on finding sandy earth for a root and eastern branches for ground.
